The Hidden Plastic in Technical Wipes
A typical polyester–cellulose technical wipe may contain approximately 45% polyester and 55% cellulose. Although the material can feel soft and paper-like, polyester is a plastic.
For a roll containing 1 kg of dry wiping material, this composition equates to:

An individual roll containing 450 g of plastic may seem relatively insignificant. Across a busy workplace, repeated purchasing and use can turn that into hundreds of kilograms each year.
Consider a business using twenty 1 kg rolls per week, each containing 45% polyester:

Changing to a Bamboo-Based Substrate
A plastic-free bamboo-based wiping substrate offers a way to remove the polyester component from the wipe itself.
The specification matters: a material described as “bamboo” should not automatically be assumed to be plastic-free. Bamboo-derived cellulose can be blended with synthetic fibres, so the complete composition—including any binders or coatings—should be confirmed.
Where the replacement is verified as free from plastic, the reduction comes directly from changing the wiping material. It can therefore complement savings already achieved through refill packs, reusable dispensers and reduced packaging.
Maintaining the Performance Your Workplace Needs
A change of substrate must also suit the cleaning task. Strength, absorbency, lint performance and compatibility with the cleaning fluid all influence whether a wipe is appropriate for a particular application.
Trialling an alternative under normal working conditions helps establish whether it delivers the required result and whether wipe consumption changes. This is especially important in technical environments where cleanliness and process consistency are essential.
Plastic-free composition also does not automatically mean a used wipe is suitable for composting or recycling. Disposal must take account of the oils, solvents or other substances collected during use.
