A bonded joint can look perfect and still contain the conditions for premature failure. A trace of release agent, an unsuitable cleaning cloth or an inconsistent application of surface activator can compromise performance before the adhesive is even dispensed.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

For manufacturing engineers and production managers, surface preparation deserves the same attention as adhesive selection, dispensing accuracy and cure conditions. The objective is to create a surface that the adhesive can wet, interact with and remain bonded to throughout the product\u2019s service life\u2014and to reproduce that condition on every assembly.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Reliable bonding begins with a controlled preparation process. That means specifying both the preparation liquid and the wipe used to apply it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A visually clean surface may not be ready for bonding<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Machining oils, mould-release agents, fingerprints and processing residues can form a barrier between the adhesive and the substrate. Some are practically invisible, yet can prevent intimate contact or leave the adhesive attached to a weak surface layer.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Preparation must therefore address the actual condition of both mating surfaces. Depending on the materials involved, this may require cleaning, controlled abrasion, surface treatment or an approved primer. Solvent cleaning alone cannot remove every type of contamination or weak boundary layer.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A work instruction that simply says \u201cwipe clean before bonding\u201d leaves too much to interpretation. The chemistry, wiping material, technique and timing all need to be defined.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Surface energy: why dyne level matters<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

An adhesive must wet the substrate sufficiently to establish effective contact. On low-surface-energy materials, such as untreated polyethylene or polypropylene, wetting can be difficult.<\/span><\/p>

Surface modification can improve this behaviour. Appropriately specified plasma, corona or flame treatment can alter surface chemistry, increase surface energy and support improved adhesion. Primers and adhesion promoters offer another route by creating a surface more compatible with the chosen adhesive. Their effectiveness depends on the substrate and adhesive system.<\/span><\/p>

In production, wettability is often assessed using a \u201cdyne level\u201d, expressed in dynes\/cm, numerically equivalent to mN\/m. Dyne liquids provide an indication of wetting behaviour; they do not directly measure bond strength.<\/span><\/p>

There is no universal dyne target suitable for every bonded joint. The acceptance level should be established for the actual substrate, adhesive and process, then supported by bond testing. Treatment timing also matters: the increased surface energy of treated polymers can decline during storage, making the interval between treatment and bonding a process variable.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Cleaning and surface activation serve different purposes. Removing contamination does not necessarily modify a low-energy substrate sufficiently for bonding.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Specify the correct preparation liquid<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The preparation liquid must suit the contamination, substrate and adhesive system.<\/span><\/p>

A cleaner suitable for light handling contamination may be inadequate for heavy processing oils. A solvent effective on metal may damage a plastic or coating. An activator may promote adhesive cure without performing the cleaning function required beforehand.<\/span><\/p>

Selection should therefore follow the adhesive manufacturer\u2019s recommendations and be confirmed on representative production materials. Specify the formulation, concentration, application method, drying or flash-off time, and permissible interval before bonding.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Where the approved cleaning procedure requires a wet wipe followed by a clean, dry wipe, retain both stages. Allowing solvent to evaporate is not equivalent to removing the contamination dissolved within it. Primers and activators may require a different method, including leaving a controlled film in place.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Even the correct liquid can produce an unreliable result when applied with an unsuitable cloth.<\/span><\/p>

The wiping substrate determines how the liquid is retained and released, how contamination is collected, and whether fibres or extractable residues are left behind. A general-purpose rag is therefore an uncontrolled component in an otherwise carefully engineered process.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
