How do Aircraft Wipes Prevent Corrosion?

3:38pm 17/05/19

Aircraft wipes from Speciality Wipes are designed specifically to help combat corrosion of metal and composite materials.
The aviation business requires skill and precision across all areas, not just to meet operational standards but also to ensure a safe flight for your passengers.

Different Types of Aircraft Corrosion

There are four main types of corrosion commonly found on aircraft –

  • Uniform Surface Attack – This occurs when metal is exposed to oxygen and moisture in the air; whilst in flight. Reasons for this include low-quality body paintwork or exposure to corrosive fumes or pollutants. The base material of composite wipes from Speciality Wipes are extremely tough and abrasive resistant approved to AMS3819 and BMF15-5F standards.
  • Intergranular Corrosion – Difficult to detect, intergranular corrosion can destroy metal alloys with a higher amount of zinc rapidly. This type of attack is commonly found on wing spars and stringers. Aircraft wipes are one of the best ways to maintain the quality of your aircraft, especially metal materials that are exposed to the elements in flight.
  • Filiform Corrosion – Usually found on poorly painted aluminium surfaces as thread-like lines.
  • Crevice or Deposit Corrosion – Debris and dust trapped in small cracks and space in the aircraft’s bodywork traps moisture causing the start of the corrosion process.
